UEC-1 is a free flooding PVC tube that mounts on Submarine NR-1.   It provides mounting points on the inside for experiments.  It was built in August of 1998 by Midshipmen Roger Cortesi, Dennis Evangelista, and Nicole Justis.

It mainly served as a way to get used to working with the ship's personnel, and to obtain an understanding of the mounting requirements or the ship.

It carried some simple passive experiments when it went to sea for approximately 6 weeks in the fall of 1998.
